Café Principles
Café Principles
Repair cafés began in Amsterdam 2009 with a journalist's vision for local sustainability. These events offered free repairs by volunteers, aiming to reduce waste and lengthen product lifespans. The concept blossomed, becoming a global movement with thousands of cafés fostering community and repair skills.
Repair cafés operate on a set of core principles:
- To promote sustainability, community, and education.
- To extend the life of possessions by offering free or low-cost repairs completed by skilled volunteers.
- Reduce electronic and other waste challenging the throw-away culture.
- Foster a sense of community by bringing people together, learn from each other's skills and build connections.
- Promote knowledge sharing by providing a platform for people to gain practical experience in fixing everyday items.
At Gravesham Repair café we serve tea and biscuits (other beverages are available).
There's no charge but we have a 'donations jar' if you wish to show your appreciation.
Donating Items
From time to time people have offered us items they no longer want - bikes, lamps etc. Please don't. We do not have the storage space and have to take them to charity shops. Please give them straight to a charity shop or offer them on Freecycle or similar sites.
